!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
Does this wake anyone up? We rely on a company that has no fealty to the 1st or any other Amendment. They are telling us that they will decide what is ‘misinformation’ and give us another partial, one-sided picture. Be scared. Be very scared that this election will kill our country due to corporate interference.
It’s not the Russians or the Chinese who will wreck us. It’s the corporations who want the weakest government they can elect so that they can get any regulations or rules or laws that they want and run roughshod over us little people.
That being said, I don’t really know what the alternatives are anymore. Do you?
Here, have a pic of Lessa not caring at all for you time.

Well if you want to be cynical, then most of America has already decided what information they are looking for and just go searching for confirmation of their bias anyway.

The alternative is moving to a Caribbean island and drinking rum on a beach.
![]() 09/10/2020 at 17:45 |

Well I think that is being flattering. People can tell what caters to their biases and then blindly accept whatever that may be. They don’t know consciously what they’re looking for because they never thought to think.

Google is turning off their “autocomplete” function for sensitive topics.
I don’t see this as a threat, although in general the near- monopoly on information that Google, Facebook, and Twitter have is troubling.

Already there, man! South GA with a couple friends to go boating with is close enough. I look at all this stuff going on in the media from my way off perch and just shake my head. Sure, now that the slate of local candidates is set, I’ll do my couple hours research into them (mostly ask locals who they like and why) and be done with it.

The main issue is that politics in the US is “entertainment” more than anywhere else with only two candidates, billion dollars budgets ( and no oversight on it) , with debasing and slander campaigns which are forbidden in most democracies.
For example in here, every candidates during the campaign time have their (and their team) speaking time counted on TV and radio so every candidates have equal time so it’s not about the one that has the biggest budget ; TV and radio spots are all of the same duration and shown in random order .
And donations are limited in amount to 4600€ per individual ( companies are not allowed to donate anymore ) with most of the campaign budget reimbursed by the state (depending on the final score) and validated by third parties to see if there is any irregularities .

Er... Live in a concrete bunker with a suitably large rum cellar so when the hurricane passes you can drink rum on the debris-covered beach anyway?

Both. Many people recieved little or no training on how to discern fact from fiction. Case in point, I can remember a teacher back in the ‘90s telling me about how many middle school kids didn’t realize that movies were not real life
.
Many of those same folks are now in their 30s and the current landscape is more or less designed to discourage them from seeking out the truth behind a headline or to tolerate dissenting opinions. It's gotten bad enough that I almost can't stand to listen to people who hold to my own biases... we need something to change.

I’m less concerned with campaign budgets than with fact checking.
You have a hard regulating donations and air time in this country because putting restrictions on one’s opportunity to put their message out runs afoul of the Constitution.

Agreed. And there are so many ideas on how to do this. I want to help but have neither the energy n or the voice anymore. Now that I have these years and a little wisdom I’m so sad when I look beyond my yard. So, I’ll just look at the sunset and comment on that. It is beautiful, again, tonight...
My Dad was a physicist and Master Machinist , Mom a Librarian. They were also teachers. All my life, I’ve asked questions and pondered the answers I get . Now one seems to anymore. These kids (anyone under 35) think they know already. I’m over 60 and still don’t know what to think about a lot of stuff. But I know a lot of stuff that narrows the options. Kids don’t seem to want to here the options. Bah!
Doc just showed up. We’re gonna burn some beef and enjoy a few laughs.

There are also more restri ctions on “freedom of speech” that is not covering slander and posing blatantly fake information as information is also not allowed but obviously followers can easily spread fake information on social medias and such but at least it can’t be official advertisement .

Or live on a strong boat that can move far enough away in time and come back to help those onshore when it’s over. There’s always plenty of warning for the mobile crowd.

Even on the hard, we have at least a months provisions on board without using a refer. In the water, it’s more like 6 months since the cans on the right side counter balance the batteries on the left side (under the berth). And all the folks here know that if they bring supplies, I’ll cook us dinner .
Doc brought Ribeyes so we’re having them pan fried with boiled taters mashed with sour cream, garlic and bacon fat and steamed broccoli with a drizzle of Pesto sauce for dinner. Dessert is a pack of Necco wafers now that they’re making them again. Don’t chew ‘em; let ‘em melt in yer mouth with a cuppa.

Eh, voter misinformation is, believe or not, pretty clear and this is not a both sides do it sort of thing.
![]() 09/10/2020 at 21:00 |

Yea, it is. Both sides spout misinformation, propaganda and outright lies. They spout somethings that are true, too, once in awhile.
W hy are there only 2 sides ? No one listening to the middle or us old farts who know everything.

It’s really sort of strange because we have access to so much information that we simply can’t process it all. I remember a time before the internet when I’d have to do a report for grade school and was taught it needed at least 3 sources for accuracy. These days we have a near infinite number of sources, with varying partisanship and influences: large and small, corporate and independent, domestic and foreign
. And yet people will read one report of the story because that’s all they can delegate their time for.
It’s kind of staggering how many people will unequivocally trust and believe a major news outlet. They don’t always report things correctly and the apologies are becoming lesser and toned down. It’s extremely bad with half-truths, where they feign plausible deniability because it’s still partially true.
And as as also stated by someone;
even when people deep dive they tend to stack deck
looking
for supporting facts instead of
contrary. If you only know your
side of the battlefield,
it’s a hell of a slog to win
...

2 news stories that just reference other (paywalled) news story without stating any of the “facts” is not relevant. The Wash Post is, again, paywalled. And that Wiki article is the most opinionated wiki article I think I’ve ever read. Read 1st quarter and realize that saying someone is a lair does not make it so. Not up to Wiki’s usual standards. Wanna try again? I am truly interested.
Broke for a cuppa and t hen re ad some more of the wiki article. After trying to verify some of the citation material, I realize I really does not care. I have no influence on what happens at that level except my vote. I’d rather spend my time researching my city council and other local/state candidates. Them I can, maybe, influence and the voting pool is a lot smaller.
